US President Joe Biden spoke to US forces based in the UK on Wednesday about his priorities after arriving ahead of the G7 summit.
Embarking on the first overseas trip of his term, Mr Biden is eager to reassert the United States on the world stage, steadying European allies deeply shaken by his predecessor and pushing democracy as the only bulwark to rising forces of authoritarianism.
Ahead of the upcoming G7, Nato and EU summits, Biden said “no single nation acting alone can meet all the challenges we face today”, before saying Covid-19 and climate change must be tackled in a multilateral way.
Mr Biden also said he would travel to Geneva during his trip to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin – and said he wanted a “stable, predictable relationship” with Russia.
He also ordered US officials to rebuke Boris Johnson for jeopardising the peace process in Northern Ireland due to its stand-off with the European Union, it emerged on Wednesday night.
